Zouave regiments were among the most visually striking units of the American Civil War, their uniforms — baggy trousers, short jackets, and fezzes — directly inspired by French colonial Zouave troops recruited from North Africa. Dozens of Union and a handful of Confederate regiments adopted the style, and many were equipped with rifles taking this fullered, brass-gripped bayonet.
