The M1 helmet was the standard steel field helmet of the United States military from the Second World War until 1985, one of the longest-serving helmet patterns in American military history. Its distinctive two-piece construction — an outer steel shell paired with a separate fibre liner — allowed the liner to be issued individually fitted, while the outer shell could double as a washbasin, stool, or cooking pot in the field. This antique camouflage finish reflects the painted and netted camouflage treatments American troops widely applied to their helmets for concealment.
The M1 helmet was adopted by the United States military shortly before its entry into the Second World War and remained standard issue until 1985, seeing service through Korea and Vietnam as well.
