Writhen hilt Gothic German Sword, 15th Century

Writhen hilt Gothic German Sword, 15th Century

This striking sword is a faithful reproduction of a late 15th-century German “writhen hilt” sword, inspired by an original preserved in the Royal Armouries. Dating to around circa 1480, this type represents the height of late medieval sword design, where function and artistic expression were seamlessly combined.

The defining feature of this sword is its distinctive writhen (twisted) hilt, where the guard, grip, and pommel are fashioned to resemble entwined branches or flowing organic forms. This “Gothic bough” style reflects the artistic language of the late medieval period—mirroring the same naturalistic motifs seen in architecture, armour, and decorative metalwork of the time.

Such swords were not only weapons but also symbols of wealth and status, requiring exceptional skill to produce. The complexity of the twisted hilt design meant that only highly trained craftsmen could achieve this level of refinement, making these swords prized possessions among knights, nobles, and professional soldiers of the late Holy Roman Empire.

The original is house at the Royal Armouries which have licenced Deepeeka to do the reproductions for commercial use.

The term “writhen” derives from Old English wrīðan, meaning to twist or contort. In the context of sword design, it refers to the deliberate shaping of hilt components into flowing, intertwined forms—an aesthetic that reflects the broader Gothic fascination with organic and natural patterns.
