Primus Isle of Eigg Viking Sword – Bronze Hilt (Scotland, 9th–10th Century)

Primus Isle of Eigg Viking Sword – Bronze Hilt (Scotland, 9th–10th Century)

Viking Bronze Hilt Sword (Isle of Egg) 800-900C

The Primus Isle of Eigg Viking Sword is a reconstruction based on a surviving bronze hilt discovered at Kildonan on the Isle of Eigg, Scotland, dating to the 9th–10th century. Characterized by its richly ornamented hilt and broad fullered blade, this type reflects high-status Viking craftsmanship. Developed under the Primus line, this piece follows museum-referenced proportions and detailing to closely represent the original artifact.

This sword is based on a notable Viking-age find from Kildonan on the Isle of Eigg in Scotland, where an elaborately decorated bronze hilt was recovered, while the original blade did not survive. The piece is dated to the 9th or early 10th century and is now associated with collections such as the National Museum of Scotland. Classified broadly within Viking sword typologies, it represents a high-status weapon likely belonging to a chieftain or elite warrior.

The original find is believed to have come from a burial context, indicating both martial and symbolic importance. Swords of this level were not common weapons but prestige items, reflecting wealth, influence, and access to skilled craftsmanship. The intricate decoration on the hilt, including geometric and animal-inspired motifs, further reinforces its elite status within Viking society.

Description

The Primus version has been developed with close attention to these historical references. The hilt is cast in bronze and finished to reflect the detailing seen on the original artifact, including multi-part construction of the pommel, grip, and guard. The assembly follows traditional methods, with the tang secured through the pommel structure to ensure both authenticity and durability.

The blade is forged from EN45 high carbon steel, featuring a broad double-edged profile with a wide central fuller, consistent with Viking-era sword geometry.
Our other version is made in Pattern welded Damacus steel (birds eye pattern) and made for reenactment/ educational purposes, and not to be used for light or heavy combat.

The proportions and weight distribution are designed to replicate the handling characteristics of historical originals rather than modern interpretations.

The sword is supplied with a wooden scabbard covered in leather, fitted with bronze elements and a suspension loop, reflecting period-correct carrying systems. This piece is available in two configurations: a standard reenactment version and a light combat version, both with blunt edges. The combat version features an edge thickness of approximately 2 to 2.5 mm, suitable for controlled reenactment use.
