Primus Viking Jarl Sword – Bronze Hilt with Leather Grip (Scotland, 9th–10th Century)

Primus Viking Jarl Sword – Bronze Hilt with Leather Grip (Scotland, 9th–10th Century)

The Primus Viking Jarl Sword is a variation of early Viking-age bronze hilt swords, featuring a leather-wrapped wooden grip paired with a cast bronze pommel and guard. Based on the same lineage as high-status Isle of Eigg–type swords, this version offers a more practical grip while retaining the visual presence of elite Viking weapons. Developed under the Primus line, it follows historically grounded proportions and construction methods.

This sword represents a class of high-status Viking weapons from the 9th to 10th century, closely aligned with examples such as the Isle of Eigg find from Scotland. These swords are characterized by their distinctive bronze hilt components, including guard and pommel, often associated with elite warriors and individuals of rank. Such weapons served not only as tools of combat but also as symbols of authority and prestige within Viking society.

While the original Isle of Eigg sword features a fully cast bronze grip, variations in historical construction did exist, and this version reflects a more practical configuration with a wooden core grip bound in leather. This approach improves handling while maintaining the overall visual identity of bronze-hilted Viking swords. The combination of materials reflects both functionality and status, consistent with the needs of active warriors.

Description

The Primus version retains the key construction features of this sword type. The hilt is cast in bronze with detailed ornamentation, and the pommel follows a traditional multi-part construction where the tang is secured within the pommel structure and reinforced through riveted assembly. This method is significantly closer to historical techniques than simplified modern reproductions.

The blade is forged from EN45 high carbon steel, featuring a broad double-edged profile with a wide central fuller typical of Viking-era swords. The geometry maintains appropriate thickness and taper to ensure both durability and historically accurate handling characteristics.
We have another version with pattern welded Damascus (birds eye pattern) blade for reenactment/ educational purposes.

The sword is paired with a wooden scabbard covered in tightly stitched leather and fitted with bronze elements, including a suspension loop for belt or baldric carry. The overall balance is designed to replicate the feel of original weapons rather than modern reinterpretations.

This model is available in two functional configurations. The standard version is intended for general reenactment use, while the combat version features an edge thickness of approximately 2 to 2.5 mm, suitable for controlled light combat. Both versions are supplied blunt.
