Primus Petersen “Type D” Viking Sword (Scandinavia, 9th–10th Century)

The Primus Petersen Type D Viking Sword is a reconstruction of early Viking-age swords characterized by their distinctive tri-lobed pommel and robust bronze hilt construction. Dating from the 9th to early 10th century, this type is widely associated with Scandinavian elite warriors. Developed under the Primus line, this piece follows historically grounded proportions and construction methods to closely reflect original examples.

Petersen Type D swords are among the earlier classified Viking sword forms, typically dated from the 9th to early 10th century and found across Scandinavia and Viking-influenced regions. These swords are distinguished by their tri-lobed pommel construction, with the central lobe raised higher than the flanking lobes, and by their solid, often heavily built hilt assemblies.

Examples of this type have been found in burial contexts and are frequently associated with high-status individuals. Their construction suggests a focus on durability and authority, with the sword serving both as a weapon and a symbol of rank. The relatively broad blades with wide fullers indicate efficient cutting performance suited to Viking combat styles.

Description

The Primus version has been developed with close adherence to these historical characteristics. The fittings are cast in bronze, incorporating the traditional multi-part pommel construction, where the pommel cap is riveted over the base structure to secure the tang. This method reflects original Viking construction techniques rather than simplified modern assembly.

The blade is forged from EN45 high carbon steel, featuring a broad double-edged profile with a central fuller. The geometry maintains appropriate thickness and taper to ensure both authenticity in appearance and reliability in use. The balance is tuned to replicate the handling characteristics of original Viking swords.
We have an additional version with a pattern welded Damascus Blade- this is for reenactment/ educational purpose only and not good for light combat.

The sword is paired with a wooden scabbard covered in leather and fitted with bronze elements, including a suspension loop designed for belt carry. This model is available with either a bronze grip or a wooden grip variant, allowing for slight variation in handling and appearance.

Two functional configurations are available. The standard version is intended for general reenactment use, while the combat version features a reinforced edge thickness of approximately 2 to 2.5 mm, suitable for controlled light combat. Both versions are supplied blunt.
