Primus Vendel Chieftain’s Sword (Grave 32, Sweden, 6th–7th Century)

Primus Vendel Chieftain’s Sword (Grave 32, Sweden, 6th–7th Century)

A Vendel-era elite warrior sword  reflecting prestige weapons of early Scandinavian nobility.

This sword is inspired by finds from Vendel-era burial sites near Uppsala, Sweden, dating to the 6th–7th century—a transitional period between the Migration Era and the Viking Age. These richly furnished graves belonged to elite warriors and chieftains, whose weapons reflected both status and exceptional craftsmanship.

The Vendel sword is characterized by its highly ornate hilt construction, often featuring multi-part assemblies, riveted pommels, and decorative inlays that echoed the aesthetic traditions of Germanic and early Scandinavian metalwork.

This reproduction captures the elegance of those original weapons, with a hilt finished in tin plating over cast bronze components. This treatment produces a subdued silver-like appearance, reflecting the historical use of white-metal finishes to emulate more precious materials.

Description

The pommel follows a traditional two-part construction, secured with rivets, while decorative elements—such as enamel inlays—evoke the garnet-inlaid ornamentation commonly found in original Vendel swords. The stylized ring element on the pommel remains symbolic, reflecting status rather than function.

The blade is forged from EN45 high carbon steel, offering durability and flexibility suitable for reenactment use. Its broad profile and moderate taper are consistent with early medieval cutting swords designed for battlefield effectiveness.
We offer this with a pattern welded damascus blade too (birds eye pattern) for reenactment/ education purpose only.

The sword is paired with a wooden scabbard wrapped in leather, featuring metal fittings and a suspension system allowing it to be worn from a belt or baldric.

This piece represents not only a weapon, but a statement of rank, craftsmanship, and early Scandinavian identity.
