The Valknut — literally the 'knot of the slain' — is a symbol of three interlocking triangles found in Viking Age art, most famously on the picture stones of Gotland such as the Tängelgårda and Stora Hammars stones. It is widely associated with Odin and the warriors chosen to join him in the afterlife. The ravens engraved alongside it represent Huginn (Thought) and Muninn (Memory), Odin's messengers who fly out across the world each day and return to whisper what they have seen into his ear. Axes themselves were the most widely carried tool and implement of the Viking Age (8th–11th century) — unlike the sword, which often marked its owner as a person of status, an axe was carried by warriors and farmers alike, across every rank of Norse society.
