The M3 was adopted by the United States Army in 1943, developed specifically as a dedicated close-quarters knife after earlier general-purpose and utility knives proved poorly suited to close-quarters use. It became one of the most widely issued American military knives of the Second World War, carried by infantry across every theatre of the conflict, and its influence carried on directly into the later, even more famous KA-BAR pattern used by the US Marine Corps.
