Inspired by an original 10th-century Viking sword housed in the Art Institute of Chicago, The Drengr is a historically accurate Deepeeka replica developed in collaboration with historical researcher Petar Djurickovic. Featuring a Petersen Type O trilobed pommel, broad fullered blade, and authentic proportions, this impressive Viking sword is ideal for collectors, living history, museums, and historical interpretation.

During the Viking Age, a sword represented far more than a personal sidearm. It was a symbol of honour, wealth, and reputation, often passed down through generations and treasured as one of a warrior’s most valuable possessions. Fine examples with decorated hilts were reserved for individuals of high standing, reflecting both social status and martial achievement.

Dating from the 10th century, the original displays an ornate silver hilt that immediately identifies it as a weapon carried by an accomplished Viking warrior.

The hilt follows Jan Petersen’s Type O classification, distinguished by its elegant trilobed pommel and decorative concentric circle ornamentation. The construction closely mirrors surviving originals, with separately assembled guard and pommel components produced using historically appropriate methods.

The blade closely follows forms later classified by Ewart Oakeshott as Type X, featuring a broad profile, long fuller, and refined taper that produces a lively yet authoritative sword capable of swift cuts and accurate point control.

Deepeeka has recreated this Viking sword with careful attention to its historical proportions and handling characteristics. The sword features the short one-handed grip typical of Viking Age originals, designed for use alongside a shield. The broad fullered blade is forged from high carbon steel and balances excellent cutting performance with responsive handling, faithfully reflecting surviving archaeological examples.

A wood-core scabbard, covered in leather and finished with traditional fittings, completes the presentation and offers an authentic appearance suitable for historical collections.
