The Knights Templar were founded in the early 12th century as a Christian military order dedicated to protecting pilgrims travelling to the Holy Land, and they grew into one of the most powerful and wealthy institutions of the Medieval world before their suppression in 1312. The order’s blade tradition drew on the broader Northern European knightly sword — long, cross-hilted, and double-edged, popular partly for the ease with which it could be recognised as a mark of Christian faith when held upright.
