The Knights Templar were suppressed across most of Europe from 1307 to 1312 under pressure from King Philip IV of France, but Scotland — at the time under papal interdict and largely outside French influence during the Wars of Independence — is popularly held to have offered refuge to knights fleeing persecution elsewhere, a tradition still debated among historians but deeply embedded in Scottish popular memory of the order.
