The current model referencing the Turin Sword of St. Maurice, a plain 13th century practical sword kept together with relics of the saint since its 1591 transfer to the Royal Chapel in Turin.
Saint Maurice was a 3rd century Roman legionary commander from Egypt, venerated as a Christian martyr after refusing, according to tradition, to persecute fellow Christians within his own legion — a legend that made him a favoured patron saint of Medieval knighthood and the Holy Roman Empire itself. This sword reflects the Turin original — a plain, unadorned practical sword, quite unlike the ceremonial Vienna sword also associated with the saint — displayed in the Armeria Reale, Turin, since 1858.
