Sports Burgonet, Combat Rated

The burgonet, sometimes called the Burgundian sallet, succeeded the sallet as a Renaissance and early modern combat helmet, characterised by a rounded skull with a fixed or hinged peak projecting above the face, an integral crest or comb running front to back, and substantial hinged cheekpieces that typically left the chin and throat exposed. This sports-rated version is built for genuine full-contact combat use, suited to buhurt and heavy combat re-enactment disciplines. Reinforced beyond a purely display-grade reproduction, it recreates the burgonet’s classic silhouette in a specification meant for repeated hard use.

Its design consciously echoed Roman legionary helmets, with cheek pieces and a central ridge, reflecting the Renaissance’s broader revival of classical forms, and early examples were produced in Milan from around 1510 to 1540. This reproduction is built to a sports combat specification, reinforced and finished for genuine full-contact use in disciplines such as buhurt and heavy Renaissance-era combat, going beyond a purely display-grade reproduction.
