A fire striker, or fire steel, is a piece of high-carbon steel struck against flint or similar hard stone to shave off tiny particles of metal that ignite as sparks, hot enough to catch tinder such as char cloth. This version follows the classic C-shaped profile, the most common and enduring fire striker form, found from Roman times through the Medieval and Viking eras. Its curved shape fits naturally over the hand and fingers, a design so practical it changed little across many centuries and cultures.
