Primus Seax of Beagnoth (Thames Scramasax, England, 9th–10th Century)

Primus Seax of Beagnoth (Thames Scramasax, England, 9th–10th Century)

This faithful reproduction of the legendary Seax of Beagnoth, featuring the only known complete Anglo-Saxon runic alphabet inscription on a blade. Crafted with real gold and silver inlay, this is a museum-grade collector’s piece made on request.

The Seax of Beagnoth—also known as the Thames scramasax—is one of the most important surviving weapons of the Anglo-Saxon world. Discovered in the River Thames in 1857 and now preserved in the British Museum, it is renowned for bearing the only known complete inscription of the twenty-eight letter Anglo-Saxon runic alphabet on a blade.

Dating to the 9th or early 10th century, this long seax represents the highest development of the Anglo-Saxon knife tradition. Unlike simpler utility blades, such weapons were prestigious possessions, likely carried by warriors or individuals of status. The length and form of the blade—often referred to as a langseax—place it firmly within the context of elite arms rather than everyday tools.

What sets the original apart is its extraordinary inscription. The runic alphabet is rendered alongside the name “Beagnoth,” believed to represent either the owner or the smith. In early medieval belief, runes were more than letters—they were symbols imbued with meaning, often associated with identity, protection, and knowledge.
