The Sturmabteilung (SA) — the ‘Brownshirts’ — were the paramilitary wing of the Nazi Party from 1921, playing a central role in street violence against political opponents during the Weimar Republic period and in Hitler’s consolidation of power following 1933. Their dagger, issued from 1933 onward, became a symbol of membership and loyalty to the organisation.
Early SA daggers featured hand-fitted nickel fittings, hardwood grips and high-quality blades inscribed with the motto ‘Alles für Deutschland.’ The dagger was worn on formal occasions and parades as a mark of SA membership and rank. After the Night of the Long Knives in June 1934, when the SA leadership was purged by the SS, the organisation’s significance declined dramatically — but the dagger continued to be produced and collected.
