A horsehair tail mounted at the crown gave this helmet a distinctive silhouette, a decorative treatment found across various early medieval Northern and Eastern European helmet traditions. The Rus, whose name may ultimately give rise to the modern name 'Russia,' represented the eastward-reaching arm of the wider Norse world, blending Scandinavian origins with the Slavic and Byzantine cultures they encountered.
The Rus were Norse traders and settlers who established a presence across Eastern Europe from the 9th century onward, following the river systems that connected Scandinavia to Byzantium and the Islamic Caliphates. Their name is widely believed to be an early root of 'Russia' itself, and their culture represented a genuine blend of Scandinavian origin with the Slavic and Byzantine societies they settled among and traded with.
Deepeeka's reproduction is fully wearable and suited to costume dressing, part of our Viking heritage range.
