Developed Roman Spatha – 2nd Century Cavalry Sword

Developed Roman Spatha – 2nd Century Cavalry Sword

This Roman Long Spatha represents an advanced stage in the evolution of Roman swords during the 2nd century CE, when longer blades began to dominate military use—particularly among cavalry units.

Based on archaeological finds preserved in the Aalen Museum, this design reflects the shift from compact infantry weapons to extended blades offering superior reach and striking capability. Compared to earlier transitional forms, this spatha features a longer and more refined blade, indicating its adaptation for mounted combat and open-field engagements.

Designed for Deepeeka by Christian Koefer, this model reflects a careful study of original historical examples while adapting the form for modern reproduction standards.

This sword captures a key moment in Roman military evolution—when the spatha transitioned from a supplementary weapon into the dominant blade of the Roman world.
