  The caliga was the standard hobnailed sandal-boot of the Roman legionary, its open, strapped design allowing genuinely good ventilation on the march while the iron-studded sole gave real grip and durability across the varied terrain of the Empire.

  So closely associated with the ordinary legionary was this footwear that the emperor Caligula, raised amid the army as a child, earned his nickname (“little boots”) from wearing a miniature pair, and the caliga’s rough treads have even been found preserved in the mud of Roman military sites across Europe.

  This reproduction is made from leather with a hobnailed sole, available in sizes 7 through 11, weighing approximately 2.2 lbs depending on size.

  Ancient Greek Leather Sandals

  Early Minoan and Mycenaean Greeks, living between roughly 3000 and 1200 BC, mostly went barefoot but had a range of sandals, shoes and boots for outdoor wear, a tradition later Greeks carried forward through the Classical period.

  All classes of Greeks removed their shoes indoors — archaeologists have confirmed this from wear patterns, since the outside steps of temples and palaces show far more erosion than the indoor steps. Footwear was made mostly of leather, tanned from cattle hide or the softer, cured hides of calves, sheep and goats for finer sandals, sometimes dyed black, red or yellow, or gilded for the wealthy.

  This caliga follows the Mainz pattern, referencing genuine archaeological finds from the Roman Rhineland that have informed some of the best-documented reconstructions of legionary footwear.

  The caliga’s open, strapped design allowed genuinely good ventilation on the march while the iron-studded sole gave real grip and durability, standard equipment for the ordinary Roman legionary across the Empire.
