Cingulum Militare, RGZM Pattern Legionary Belt

The cingulum militare, a leather belt covered in decorative metal plates, was one of the most visible pieces of a Roman soldier’s kit — worn as much to display rank and honour as to hold up the braccae, or trousers, in battle. This reproduction follows the RGZM pattern, modelled on an original artefact dated to the second half of the 1st century AD, now held at the Romano-Germanic Central Museum in Mainz. Natural tanned leather is fitted with brass plates and studs, complete with attachment points for hanging a pugio dagger.

Roman soldiers wore the cingulum as more than practical kit: its riveted brass plates and studded surface made it a genuine display piece, and the more elaborate a soldier’s belt, the more it signalled status within the unit. This RGZM-pattern reproduction is modelled directly on an original 1st-century AD artefact held at the Romano-Germanic Central Museum in Mainz, one of the key reference collections for Roman military equipment. Built from natural tanned leather with brass plates and studs, it includes attachment points for suspending a pugio dagger, following the historical practice of hanging a soldier’s sidearm from the belt itself.
