The shields large size allowed the soldiers to form a “tustudo’ or shield wall that could protect them during an advance.

This Roman Republic Shield is constructed from poplar wood is backed in linen. It is fitted with a riveted brass trim and steel shield boss. The face of the shield is hand-painted and its reverse is reinforced with wooden bands and fitted with a horizontal grip of wood.
