  The folding X-frame stool has a genuinely long pedigree as a symbol of authority rather than ordinary seating: the Roman sella curulis was reserved for magistrates, generals and the emperor, its backless design deliberately uncomfortable enough to keep officials from lingering too long at their duties. Medieval Europe inherited that tradition through the faldstool, an X-framed folding seat used by kings, abbots and bishops, since chairs of any kind remained genuinely uncommon and were themselves a mark of status through much of the Middle Ages, when most people sat on plain benches.

  This reproduction recreates the sella curulis tradition of the folding Roman stool, portable camp and household seating for officers and officials on the move.
