  Roman military decorations included torc-shaped medals alongside true phalerae discs, a tradition beginning in 361 BC when the consul Titus Manlius Torquatus defeated a Gallic chieftain in single combat and took the man’s torc as a trophy, wearing it himself thereafter.

  This example recreates that torc-form decoration with lion-head terminals, worn by soldiers as a badge of honour that, unlike some other awards, could be displayed publicly at all times.

  This reproduction is cast in brass and tin-coated, weighing approximately 50g, sold as a standalone component for mounting onto a belt, harness, or armour.

  Phalerae were a genuine class of Roman military decoration, gold, silver or bronze discs awarded to centurions and standard-bearers for acts of valour and worn as a set on the chest harness during parades, sometimes mounted on the staffs of unit standards. The tradition traces back to ancient Greek phalara, adorning armour and horse harness, adopted by Rome via the Etruscans by the 4th century BC, and the term survives today in “phaleristics,” the study of orders and decorations.

  This listing appears to be an earlier, uncoated brass version of our Celtic torc-form phalera, since it shares the same design as its tin-coated counterpart (listed separately with a “T” suffix SKU) but carries no price or dimensional data in our current catalogue.
