A standard pikeman’s kit combined a simple helmet or pot with a breastplate and backplate for torso protection, a gorget to guard the throat, and tassets — hinged thigh plates — to protect the upper legs while still allowing the mobility needed to manoeuvre a pike in formation. Muscle Armour, Brass (Lorica Musculata)
SKU: AH6071BThis full-length brass muscle cuirass follows the classical lorica musculata form, its surface sculpted to mimic an idealised male torso in the tradition established by Greek armourers and inherited by Rome. Worn over a padded subarmalis and secured with leather straps, this style of armour marked out officers, tribunes and commanders rather than the ordinary legionary, who typically wore mail or segmented plate. Its combination of anatomical sculpting and reflective brass surface made it as much a visual statement of rank and heroic bearing as a piece of protective equipment.
