Roman Phalera, Alexander the Great, Tin-Coated Brass

Phalerae were a genuine class of Roman military decoration, gold, silver or bronze discs awarded to centurions and standard-bearers for acts of valour and worn as a set on the chest harness during parades, sometimes mounted on the staffs of unit standards. The tradition traces back to ancient Greek phalara, adorning armour and horse harness, adopted by Rome via the Etruscans by the 4th century BC, and the term survives today in “phaleristics,” the study of orders and decorations.

This example carries a portrait associated with Alexander the Great, whose image remained a popular and enduring decorative motif across the ancient Mediterranean world long after his death.
