The Petersen Type M Viking sword is one of the most widespread sword hilt forms found in Norway, with several hundred originals preserved or recovered, dated from the mid-9th to early 10th century and concentrated in Eastern Norway, with fewer examples turning up in Sweden and Iceland. Its simple but eminently practical hilt form suggests it was less a status symbol for the elite than a working sword carried widely across ordinary Norwegian warrior households.
