“Oni Kanabo” is a historical Japanese war club, with its name combining the weapon type (kanabo) and the mythological demon (oni) associated with it. While the kanabo was a real weapon used by samurai and warrior monks to crush armor, the “Oni Kanabo” has become a legendary item in Japanese folklore, symbolizing immense, superhuman strength. This association has led to the Japanese proverb, “giving a kanabo to an oni,” which means to give an already strong person an additional advantage.
The origins of the kanabō are obscure, but it appears in records from the late Heian period (794–1185). Early clubs were made of hardwood reinforced with iron, sometimes banded with rings or lined with spikes. These designs were meant to crush armor and bones rather than slice. During the Kamakura period (1185–1333) and Muromachi period (1336–1573), weapons like the kanabō were used by certain samurai and by warrior monks. Their intimidating design made them useful not only in combat but also in psychological warfare.
