This sword is characteristic of the type carried by Vikings in the latter part of the Viking Age, in the 11th century. The wide blade and ‘tea cosy’ pommel are typical of Viking swords found in areas colonised by Vikings in northern France and Germany. The Bayeux Tapestry depicts a sword with a pommel identical to this one being worn by William the Conqueror, the famous Norman whose ancestors were Viking colonists — a striking reminder of how directly the Norman world grew out of Viking Scandinavia. These wide, fullered blades could chop and slice with great power while retaining the flex and durability needed for the clash of blades and the occasional strike against a stout shield.
This ‘New Model’ version supersedes Deepeeka’s earlier Norwegian Viking Sword (AH6968), reflecting our ongoing programme of design refinement across the Viking heritage range.
