A reproduction of the Norman prick spur, the earliest post-Conquest spur form, whose formal presentation to a newly made knight is widely believed to be the origin of the phrase 'earning your spurs.'

Spurs made their appearance in Western Europe with the Normans, following the 1066 Conquest — the earliest post-Conquest form is the prick spur, a simple iron design with a single fixed point, secured to the boot with leather straps and depicted worn by Norman cavalry throughout the Bayeux Tapestry. Spurs quickly became bound up with rank and chivalry: only knights or royalty were permitted gilded or gold spurs, an esquire's spurs were silver, and a page's were tinned. The practice of formally presenting spurs to a newly made knight is widely believed to be the origin of the English phrase 'earning your spurs' — and the reverse held true as well, with a disgraced knight's spurs publicly broken as part of his humiliation.

Deepeeka's reproduction is a full-size reproduction in steel, part of our Norman heritage range.
