Primus Dyback Viking Sword – Brass Hilt (Sweden, 10th–11th Century)

Primus Dyback Viking Sword – Brass Hilt (Sweden, 10th–11th Century)

The Primus Dyback Viking Sword (“Eric the Viking sword”) is a reconstruction of a high-status Viking weapon discovered in Skåne, Sweden, dating to the 10th–11th century. Notable for its richly detailed bronze hilt and strong Anglo-Saxon stylistic influence, this type reflects elite craftsmanship of the Viking Age. Developed under the Primus line, this piece follows historically grounded proportions and construction methods.

This sword is based on an original Viking-age find from Dyback in Skåne, Sweden, dating to the late 10th to early 11th century. The piece is notable for its richly decorated hilt, featuring intricate knotwork and animal motifs that reflect both Norse artistic traditions and strong Anglo-Saxon influence, particularly the Winchester style of metalwork.

Swords of this type were high-status weapons, often associated with chieftains, elite warriors, or individuals of considerable wealth. The level of ornamentation and craftsmanship seen in surviving examples suggests that such swords were not only functional weapons but also symbols of prestige and identity within Viking society.

Primus by Deepeeka’s version is made in brass, instead of Bronze for the modern reenactor.

Description

The Primus version has been developed with close attention to these historical characteristics. The hilt is cast in brass with detailed relief work, reflecting the ornate decoration of the original artifact. The pommel follows a traditional multi-part construction, with the tang secured internally and reinforced through riveted assembly, replicating historical methods rather than simplified modern techniques.

The blade is forged from EN45 high carbon steel, featuring a broad double-edged profile with a central fuller. The geometry maintains appropriate thickness and taper, ensuring both durability and historically accurate handling characteristics.
Another version comes with a pattern welded Damascus blade for reeenactment/ educational purposes only.

The grip is constructed with a wooden core, tightly bound in braided wire or leather depending on variant, providing a secure and period-appropriate hold. The sword is paired with a wooden scabbard covered in stitched leather and finished with detailed bronze fittings and a suspension loop for belt carry.

This model is available in two functional configurations. The standard version is intended for reenactment use, while the combat version features an edge thickness of approximately 2 to 2.5 mm for controlled light combat. Both versions are supplied blunt.
