A six-pointed flanged mace based on an original in the founding collection of the British Museum, bequeathed in 1753 by Sir Hans Sloane, the physician and collector whose 71,000-object bequest established the museum itself.
The original this piece is based on was part of Sir Hans Sloane’s founding collection at the British Museum, one of a small number of Medieval military artefacts Sloane collected among his vastly larger natural history holdings. It was discovered at Windsor, and may originally have come from Windsor Castle — Sloane himself had connections there, having served as physician to Queen Anne and later to King George II. The mace’s six-pointed flanged head reflects the classic Late Medieval form built to defeat plate armour through concentrated, bruising impact.
