The word lantern reaches English via French from the Latin lanterna, itself possibly rooted in Greek, and an older English spelling, “lanthorn,” reflects the material most early lanterns relied on for their windows: thinly sliced, polished animal horn, translucent enough to pass a warm, diffused glow while shielding the flame from wind and rain.
