Langeid Viking Sword – 11th Century Norwegian Sword Replica

Langeid Viking Sword – 11th Century Norwegian Sword Replica

A remarkable and historically significant weapon, the Langeid Sword is one of the most unusual Viking Age discoveries ever unearthed. Found in Grave 8 at Langeid in Setesdal, Norway, this early 11th century sword stands apart for its richly decorated hilt and the enigmatic inscriptions that continue to puzzle scholars.

Unlike typical Viking swords, the hilt of the Langeid example is adorned with a series of crosses and symbolic motifs, along with a rare depiction of a hand grasping a cross. These elements strongly suggest Christian influence at a time when Norse pagan traditions were gradually giving way to the spread of Christianity. The blade itself carries inscriptions whose meanings remain debated—some characters appear inverted or arranged unusually, leading to theories that they reference biblical texts, prayers, or designs inspired by Anglo-Saxon coinage.

The sword was discovered in a burial that otherwise reflects traditional Norse customs, making it a powerful representation of a transitional era—where belief systems, cultures, and identities overlapped. Today, the original artifact is preserved in the Museum of Cultural History in Oslo.

The sword is on display at the Museum of Cultural History in Oslo.
