Laconia, the region surrounding Sparta in the Peloponnese, gave its name to one of history’s most disciplined hoplite traditions, where losing one’s shield in battle carried such shame that Spartan mothers were said to send sons to war with the instruction to return “with it, or on it.” This reproduction recreates a decorated variation of the hoplite shield associated with that Laconian and Spartan military culture.

This decorated variation of the traditional hoplon shield takes its name from Laconia, the region of Greece also known as Lacedaemonia, homeland of ancient Sparta. Laconia’s hoplite tradition, most famously embodied by Spartan warriors, placed enormous cultural weight on the shield as a symbol of duty and discipline.
