The tomahawk is a type of axe native to North America, traditionally resembling a hatchet with a straight shaft. The English name entered the language in the 17th century as a transliteration of a Virginian Algonquian word, and while original tomahawks carried stone heads, contact with European traders introduced iron and brass heads from the colonial period onward.
