It was mainly used in medieval times for clearing paths loaded with stone and other obstructions, as well as basic quarrying and mining work. Neolithic and Upper Palaeolithic peoples used millstones of this kind to grind grains, nuts, rhizomes and other plant foods for consumption, relying on saddlestones or rotary querns turned by hand well before mechanised milling existed. The same basic devices were also used to grind pigments and metal ores prior to smelting, making the quern one of the most versatile and enduring tools in early human technology.

This version is styled after fire strikers recovered from grave finds at Birka, Sweden, a major Viking-Age trading centre whose burials have yielded numerous genuine examples. Birka’s cemeteries have produced some of the most extensively documented fire strikers in Scandinavian archaeology.

This version is styled after fire strikers associated with Novgorod and wider Eastern European finds, offering a distinct regional profile from the more commonly reproduced Scandinavian shapes. Eastern European strikers developed their own regional character, related to but genuinely distinct from Viking Scandinavian patterns.
