Imperial Gallic ‘H’ Helmet, Standard Pattern

The Imperial Gallic H represents a mature stage of the Gallic helmet series, likely in service during Rome's early campaigns into Britain. Gallic-series helmets are distinguished from their Italic cousins by a pair of embossed eyebrows above the face opening, a decorative motif H. Russell Robinson attributed to accomplished Celtic smiths working in Gaul. This standard pattern reflects the equipment of an ordinary legionary, without the rank-marking crest treatment given to centurions or optiones.

H. Russell Robinson classified Roman legionary helmets in his 1975 work The Armour of Imperial Rome, and believed the raised-eyebrow decoration characteristic of Imperial Gallic helmets reflected the expertise of Celtic craftsmen working in Gaul, as distinct from the plainer Italic series he attributed to less specialised workshops elsewhere in the Empire.
