  This simple bowl-shaped helmet reflects the practical, economical protection worn by Medieval archers, whose need for a clear line of sight and good hearing shaped their equipment choices. Unlike the fully enclosing great helm favoured by mounted knights, archers generally wore lighter, more open helmets suited to drawing a bow and tracking targets.   Italo-Corinthian Helmet, Iron

  The Italo-Corinthian helmet developed a distinctive silhouette after Italian warriors took to wearing the classical Corinthian helmet pushed up on the forehead, even in the thick of battle, for a clearer view and better hearing. This eventually transformed the once face-covering visor into a purely decorative feature, while the helmet itself came to be worn more like a cap than a fully enclosing helm. This iron construction reflects the material used for many genuine surviving examples of the type.

  Imperial Italic ‘B’ Auxiliary Helmet

  SKU: AH6317N

  This helmet recreates the archetypical early Imperial Italic B type, standard-issue equipment for Roman auxiliary infantry.

  Its rounded bowl, brow reinforcement or “peak,” and narrow neck guard finished with a single embossed step are joined by an embossed “faux visor” and ear openings protected by a turned-out flange, worked in steel with brass trim. The best surviving original example of this helmet type is held in the Archaeological Museum in Zagreb.

  Krefeld Helmet (Imperial Italic D)

  The Krefeld helmet belongs to Robinson's Imperial Italic D classification, one of the plainer, more soldierly helmet forms that equipped Roman legionaries from the late 1st century BC into the 3rd century AD. Unlike its more ornately decorated Imperial Gallic cousins, the Italic series dispensed with the raised eyebrow motif entirely, reflecting a simpler, faster production method historian H. Russell Robinson attributed to Italian workshops rather than the accomplished Gallic smiths of the north. Its find, recovered near Krefeld in Germany, sits among the well-documented cluster of Imperial helmets that trace the legions' long presence along the Rhine frontier.
