  This helmet reflects the equipment of the Spartan army, whose citizens — trained from childhood in the famously demanding agoge system — formed the core of one of the ancient world's most feared military forces. Spartan hoplites typically carried a version of the Corinthian helmet, its enclosed bronze form offering strong protection within the tightly packed ranks of the phalanx formation Sparta's army was built around.   The Italo-Corinthian helmet developed a distinctive silhouette after Italian warriors took to wearing the classical Corinthian helmet pushed up on the forehead, even in the thick of battle, for a clearer view and better hearing. This eventually transformed the once face-covering visor into a purely decorative feature, while the helmet itself came to be worn more like a cap than a fully enclosing helm.
