The doru — the primary spear of Greek hoplite infantry, a two-to-three-metre spear with a leaf-shaped head at one end and a shorter secondary spike, the sauroter, at the other.

The doru was the primary spear carried by Greek hoplite infantry, a substantial spear typically two to three metres long, its main leaf-shaped blade at the front balanced by a shorter secondary spike — the sauroter, or point-first counterweight, — at the butt end, which served both as a counterweight and as a backup point if the main shaft snapped in the crush of the phalanx. The doru, wielded overhand alongside the large round hoplite shield, defined the martial style of the Greek city-states for centuries.
