Gothic Leg Protection (Cuisse and Greave), 18-Gauge Steel

Leg armour in a Gothic harness ran from the thigh to the ankle, combining the cuisse over the thigh, the poleyn at the knee, and the greave over the shin and calf. Attached to the faulds and tassets hanging from the cuirass, this leg protection completed the lower half of a full Gothic suit. This 18-gauge steel reproduction follows the lightly fluted Gothic finish, articulated at the knee for genuine mobility on foot or on horseback.

A complete Gothic leg harness protected the entire limb through a chain of articulated plates: the cuisse over the thigh, a poleyn covering and flexing at the vulnerable knee joint, and the greave enclosing the shin and calf below. This continuous coverage mattered as much for mounted knights, whose legs were exposed alongside the horse, as for those fighting on foot. This reproduction recreates that layered leg defence in 18-gauge steel with the lightly fluted finish characteristic of the German Gothic style.
