Primus Alexandria Arsenal Milanese Sword – Finger Guard (Italy, Early 15th Century)

Primus Alexandria Arsenal Milanese Sword – Finger Guard (Italy, Early 15th Century)

The Primus Alexandria Arsenal Milanese Sword is a reconstruction of an early 15th-century European sword associated with the Royal Armouries collection, dated to 1432. Featuring a distinctive finger guard and slender thrust-oriented blade, it represents the transition toward more complex hilt designs. Developed under the Primus line, this piece follows historically grounded proportions and construction methods.

This sword is based on a well-documented early 15th-century example associated with the Royal Armouries in Leeds, believed to have originated from the Arsenal of Alexandria. Many such weapons reached the Mamluk arsenals through diplomatic exchanges, tribute, or capture during conflicts in the Eastern Mediterranean. The presence of European swords in these collections provides valuable insight into the evolution of medieval arms.

Dated to 1432, this sword falls within the Oakeshott Type XIX classification, characterized by its relatively broad blade with parallel edges, a hexagonal cross-section, and a short ricasso. These features reflect a transitional period in European sword design, where emphasis began shifting toward improved thrusting capability while retaining effective cutting performance.

Description

The Primus version has been developed with close attention to these historical characteristics. The blade is forged from EN45 high carbon steel and features a tapered profile designed for both balance and responsiveness. The hilt is constructed with a straight crossguard and a disc pommel, both finished in blued steel to reflect period aesthetics.

A defining feature of this sword is the finger guard, representing an early step toward more complex and protective hilts. This element allows the user to place a finger over the guard for improved control, particularly in thrusting techniques. The grip is constructed from wood and tightly wrapped in braided wire, providing a secure and historically appropriate hold.

The sword is supplied with a wooden scabbard covered in leather and fitted with steel elements, including suspension rings for period-correct carry. The overall handling is light and responsive, closely reflecting the characteristics of surviving originals.
