Primus Fetter Lane Sword – 8th Century Anglo-Saxon Sword (British Museum)

Primus Fetter Lane Sword – 8th Century Anglo-Saxon Sword (British Museum)

A museum-inspired Anglo-Saxon sword based on the famous Fetter Lane hilt, showcasing the intricate silver-style decoration of early medieval elite weapons.

The Fetter Lane sword is one of the most remarkable surviving examples of Anglo-Saxon craftsmanship from the 8th century. Discovered in London and now preserved in the British Museum, the original find consists primarily of the hilt—yet even in partial survival, it stands as a masterpiece of early medieval metalwork.

This reproduction draws directly from that surviving hilt, faithfully recreating its complex multi-part construction and richly detailed ornamentation. The pommel features a distinctive arched central element flanked by lobed sections, all carefully riveted together in traditional fashion. The grip and upper hilt are adorned with intricate relief work, including spiraled serpent forms on one side and a stylized beast motif on the other—hallmarks of Anglo-Saxon artistic tradition.

The original artifact was crafted in silver, partially gilded and decorated with niello inlay, creating a striking contrast of light and dark tones. This version interprets that appearance through a tin-plated finish over the hilt components, producing a historically accurate silver-like aesthetic while preserving the depth of the engraved detailing.

Description

The blade is forged from EN45 high carbon steel, shaped in the broad, parallel-edged style typical of early medieval swords, optimized for powerful cutting strokes. Like many surviving examples from this period, the emphasis is on durability and battlefield functionality rather than extreme taper or thrusting specialization.
We also supply a pattern welded Damascus blade for reenactment and educational purpose only.

The sword is completed with a wooden scabbard wrapped in leather and fitted with metal components, allowing it to be worn suspended from a belt or baldric.

This piece represents the artistic and cultural peak of Anglo-Saxon sword-making—where weaponry served not only as a tool of war, but as a symbol of rank, identity, and craftsmanship.
