Fenrir’ Viking Shield
Fenrir’ Viking Shield Dia
This Viking shield is a stunning piece made of 13mm thick plywood and features a stylized motif of the wolf Fenrir and a sequence of runes from the Elder Futhark (oldest runic alphabet) that spell out his name. Fenrir is one of the world’s three tormentors, along with Hel and the Midgard Serpent Jörmungandr. Fenrir, a child of the evil god Loki and the giantess Angrboda, fights against the existing order and ultimately symbolizes the annihilation of the world. The gods chain Fenrir to a rock and sink him deep into the earth, with Tyr, the god of war, even sacrificing a hand for the plan to succeed. The wolf is shackled for a long time, eventually breaking his chains and devouring Odin. Odin’s son Widar kills Fenrir, but it is too late, and the Allfather of the Gods falls and the order of the world.
The shield’s center features a steel boss tightly held in place with four rivets, leaving enough space for stout Viking hands. The shield’s edge is clad with rawhide, and the back is fitted with three wooden reinforcement slats. This early medieval wooden shield is a great accessory for re-enactment, LARP, stage, or TV/film, and makes a nice collectible or display piece for Viking Age enthusiasts.
