The Viking — or Carolingian-era — sword developed from the Merovingian sword, itself a product of 6th–7th century Frankish smiths working in a tradition derived from the Roman Spatha. In turn, the Viking sword gave rise to the high Medieval knightly sword of the 11th and 12th centuries. This piece recreates an early example within that chain, sitting at the plainer, earlier end of the Viking sword family before the more elaborate lobed hilt forms of the later Viking Age developed.
