Torcs and their smaller cuff-style descendants were worn across Celtic Europe from Iberia to Bohemia, crafted from bronze, copper, silver and gold by metalworkers who, according to some accounts, were held in similar regard to poets and druids within Celtic society. Beyond simple decoration, these pieces marked out warriors, leaders and the wealthy, and were sometimes believed to carry protective qualities into battle — a belief that did not stop them being highly prized as war booty, with one Roman haul from 191 BC alone amounting to 1,500 gold torcs taken from a defeated Celtic army. This adjustable brass cuff reproduces the plain, unadorned end of that tradition, sized to fit a range of wrist or arm sizes.
Celtic Cuff, Plain Design
The Celtic cuff descends from the torc, the open-ended metal ring worn at the neck, wrist or arm across Celtic Europe as a mark of status, rank and sometimes protective or spiritual significance. Roman writers such as Diodorus Siculus described Celtic warriors adorned with gold bracelets and heavy neck rings, and captured torcs were prized enough as war trophies that a Roman general once took the nickname “Torquatus” after winning one in single combat. This adjustable brass cuff recreates that open-band form in a plain, unadorned pattern, true to the simpler end of the historical range of Celtic arm and wrist jewellery.

The three overlapping discs offered targeted protection to the chest without the weight of a full cuirass, and the accompanying ornamented brass belt was itself considered a mark of a warrior’s status in Central Italy during this period.
This reproduction recreates that historic three-disc armour with its brass belt, suited to an Etruscan, Samnite, or gladiatorial impression.

Gladiator Shoulder Guard, Iron (Galerus)
SKU: AH6235IThe galerus was the single most distinctive piece of armour worn by the retiarius, the lightly-equipped “net-man” gladiator who fought with trident and net rather than sword and shield. Rising high over the left shoulder, it protected the neck and side of the head while leaving the fighter otherwise almost bare — no helmet, no greaves, no body armour beyond this one raised guard. This iron version offers the same silhouette as the brass galerus in a plainer, more workmanlike finish, closer to the unadorned guards issued to lower-status fighters.

The muscle cuirass, or lorica musculata, sculpted a warrior’s torso into the idealised heroic physique first developed by Greek armourers and adopted across the Roman world as a mark of rank. This shorter form, ending above the waist, carries a central Gorgon’s head medallion — a protective motif frequently seen on the armour of officers and commanders in Greco-Roman art. Rather than standard-issue kit for the legionary ranks, this style of cuirass was worn by senior officers, generals, and, in artistic depiction, emperors and deities, projecting heroic and divine authority.
