A shortened, trench-modified version of the French Lebel 'Rosalie' bayonet — many original Rosalie bayonets were cut down by soldiers and ordnance sections into compact trench knives once trench warfare made the full-length needle bayonet impractical.
The full-length Lebel 'Rosalie' bayonet, effective as a thrusting design against pre-war expectations of open-field warfare, proved unwieldy in the cramped confines of First World War trenches. Individual soldiers and army ordnance sections frequently cut down the long, needle-like blades into shorter, dagger-like trench knives better suited to close-quarters trench conditions — a practical field modification this piece reflects.
