Peterson Type D Viking Sword (10th C.)

Peterson Type D Viking Sword (10th C.)

This Viking sword is a faithful recreation of a Petersen Type D sword associated with the C-2 Barrow burial, an important archaeological classification linked to Viking Age finds from Eastern Europe and the regions influenced by the Kievan Rus.

The original example, discovered during excavations of a Central Barrow group burial, was found beneath the remains of a funerary pyre—bent and deliberately placed as part of burial rites. Such treatment was common in Viking and Rus funerary traditions, symbolizing the transition of the weapon from the world of the living to that of the dead.

Type D swords, as classified by Jan Petersen, are among the earlier Viking hilt forms, typically dated between the 9th and early 10th centuries. However, later scholarship, including the work of Eastern European archaeologists such as F.A. Androshchuk, extends their usage into the first half of the 10th century—placing this example firmly within a dynamic period of cultural exchange across Scandinavia and the Rus territories.

One of the defining features of this sword type is its distinctive two-part pommel construction, through which the tang passes and is riveted, creating a robust and durable hilt assembly. The original blade is noted for bearing symbolic markings—an “O”-shaped motif on one side and a cross-like mark on the other—details that may represent maker’s marks, symbolic identifiers, or early religious influence.

Description

Deepeeka’s Primus reproduction captures these defining characteristics with precision. The blade is forged from high carbon steel and shaped to reflect the broad, powerful cutting profile typical of Viking war swords. The hilt is cast in brass and finished with intricate detailing, while the grip is constructed over a wooden core and bound tightly for durability and authenticity.

The sword is accompanied by a wooden scabbard wrapped in leather, completing a historically grounded presentation suitable for collectors, reenactors, and students of early medieval arms.
