The cutlass was the defining sidearm of the Golden Age of Piracy — a short, curved, single-edged blade designed for close-quarters fighting in the confined spaces of a ship’s deck. Carried by pirates, privateers and naval sailors alike from the late 17th through the 18th century, it was the practical working blade of the age of sail — built for chopping rather than fencing, and equally at home clearing rigging or repelling boarders.
